On the 2nd of August 2013 ABZ Holdings was invited to attend a book review written by Christa Kuljian. The title of the book is called Sanctuary: HOW AN INNER CITY CHURCH SPILLED ON A SIDEWALK. The book was launched or published in March 2013 by Jacana Media.
The primary focus of the book is the xenophobia attacks that took place in 2008 and, how the Central Methodist Church helped the destitutes who were victims of xenophobia. The book is addressing the human issues that most do not want to talk about hence; the writer describes herself as a voice of the society.
The xenophobic attacks started out in January 2008 when the South African police raided the Central Methodist Church in Smal Mall Street. There was a huge rift during the time and, the animosity of South Africans began to manifest itself. It is a known fact that majority of Zimbabweans are living in South Africa with a population of about 2million.
Most of the South African tend to believe that all the people from other countries are here to steal their jobs and that also forms part of why there are a lot of xenophobic attacks happening in South Africa. Therefore, Christa is trying to address the role that the Central Methodist Church led by Bishop Paul Verryn played into helping the immigrants settle in. it touches on apartheid but, definitely a powerful book on courage of the human spirit.
